What have we been doing?

Autumn Term 2025

29th September - 3rd October

Our text this week was Jack and the Beanstalk. We thought about how mum felt when she looked out of the window and decided she would have been surprised. We drew mum with the beanstalk.
In phonics, we learned two new sounds - ‘t’ and ‘p.’ We are using the sounds we know to segment and blend cvc words.
We continued sorting in maths this week. We decided our own criteria to make a set and explained our reasoning. We compared sets and are trying hard to use the mathematical vocabulary, more, fewer and the same.
We have learned to sing ‘Big Red Combine Harvester,’ we are looking forward to singing it at our Harvest Festival and showing the rest of the school the actions.
On Tuesday, our School Improvement Advisor who is also a registered Ofsted inspector came to visit. She was very impressed with our beautiful behaviour and our super learning. Well done Reception! ⭐️

22nd - 26th September

This week in phonics, we have been learning the initial sounds s and a. We have continued with fine motor exercises to improve our finger strength and practised holding a pencil correctly for mark making using the tripod grip. Our focus text this week was The Three Little Pigs, and we enjoyed joining in with the repetitive refrains. We drew a picture from the story and talked about what we had drawn.

In maths, we read 'Sniffles and the Autumn Crown' and then we matched, sorted and compared autumn leaves.

This week we have also practised the fire drill.  The Reception team were really proud of how we walked silently to the safety point in the field.

On Friday, we looked exceptionally smart ready for our first school photo.

15th - 19th September

Our focus text was the Colour Monster. For our first writing activity, we learned how to sit correctly and how to hold a pencil correctly. We drew the colour monster and decided which emotion our monster was feeling. We have also been doing lots of fine motor activities. We learned two new number songs this week, ‘5 Little Men in a Flying Saucer’ and ‘1,2,3,4,5 Once I Caught a Fish Alive.’

8-12th September

We worked with Mr Postans and Mrs Walford and played some games on the iPad. (Each child completed the Reception baseline which is a statutory requirement. Results will be shared during parent consultations on Monday 6th October.) We continued to explore the various learning environments both inside and outside. We visited the school library and chose our first book to take home. We have enjoyed singing the number songs ‘5 Little Speckled Frogs’ and 10 Fat Sausages.

3-5th September

We spent the first three days of term learning our new routines, getting to know the Reception team and our new classroom and outdoor area.
