Science Week

We had a very busy week, starting with our Recycling challenge on Monday. We worked together to sort it, weigh it and plan what to do with it. Our classroom was full of rubbish but we soon converted it into mini beast hotels, homes and cities…

On Tuesday we had a visit from Animal mania ~ we met lots of mini beasts, some familiar ones and some new ~ we were all very brave and held Madagascan hissing cockroaches, giant millipedes, African land snails (smaller than ours!) and Australian stick insects (bigger than ours). We also saw a tarantula and a scorpion.

Bluebell Walk

We went on our annual bluebell walk today. We went through the ‘kissing gate’,walked through the fields then arrived in the bluebell wood, where we saw hundreds of beautiful bluebells and other flowers. We made a big circle around the listening tree, held hands and stood quietly listening to the birds and other sounds. After that we walked through the rest of the wood and back through the fields. It was great fun…

Severn Valley Go Wild in the Countryside

We had a fantastic trip on Wednesday 15th May. Our day began with a journey on a double decker coach. Then we caught the steam train from Bewdley to Country Park Halt where we were met by Ed and two other guides who took us to the countryside centre along some very pretty walks. We were ready for our lunch when we arrived. After lunch we did some bird watching in a bird hide ( we had to keep quiet, a bit tricky for some of us!). Then we went mini-beast hunting in a meadow and pond dipping. We found some weird and wonderful creatures. At the end of the day we walked back to catch the steam train back to Bewdley, where our double decker coach was waiting to take us back to school. You can see from the photographs what a fabulous day we had…

Circle of life

We are really enjoying our new Summer topic entitled ‘Circle of Life’. We began by planting seeds in our vegetable garden, which had been prepared by some of us and our parents. We also planted some seed potatoes for our competition challenge set by Mrs. Osborn. In the classroom we have been busy growing our own ‘magic’ beans. We are keeping a diary to record how fast they grow ~ we think some might grow as big as Jack’s in Jack and the Beanstalk! We will then plant them out in our vegetable garden too. Each group has also planted some cress seeds in different things to see which grow the best.

We are really looking forward to our trip on the Severn Valley Railway and our ‘Go Wild in the Countryside’ experience on Wednesday. ~ Watch out for the photos next week!

Easter Celebrations

easter large

We had a very exciting end of term at Ombersley. On Tuesday The Friends put on an Easter Egg hunt for us. Then on the last day we all wore our Easter Bonnets and Easter Hats and went down to Ombersley Church for our Easter Service. As usual, it was wonderful and we were all very proud of the children’s performances ~ Year 1 sang ‘The Seed Song’ beautifully.

Take a look at the photographs, we all looked Absolutely Fabulous….

We hope you all have a Very Happy Easter, enjoy a good rest over the holidays ~ the children all definately deserve one, they have all worked extremely hard this term!

We look forward to seeing you all on Tuesday 9th April for an exciting new term with a brand new topic.

Year 1 Bake off

Thank you to all those ‘Super Mums’ who stood in the freezing cold selling cakes and raffle tickets ~ you were wonderful. Thank you also to everyone who made and bought cakes. They were nearly all gone by the time we came out of school!

Miss Cartwright had the golden ticket and was thrilled with her gorgeous cup cake ~ she did share it with the rest of the staff!!

Book Week

World Book Day 004

During Book week we read another Oliver Jeffers story called The Way Back Home. In this story the boy travels to The Moon and makes a new friend ~ a Martian. As our Book week had a design and technology focus, we decided to design our own Moon buggies so that the boy and the Martian could travel across the moon. We had great fun making them, we had to measure, saw, glue and put them all together. Thankyou, Mrs.Harding and Mrs. Brown for coming and helping us. Have a look…

On World Book Day we all dressed up as our favourite book character, all the teachers dressed up too. Can you guess who we all are?
Don’t forget to come and watch our Book Week assembly on Thursday morning at 9.00am where we will tell you all about what we did.

Floating and Sinking

In Science we have been experimenting with floating and sinking. We designed and made our own boats to help The Boy and The Penguin travel back to The South Pole. We carried out ‘fair testing’ by making sure we all had the same amount of plasticine. The winning boat floated for over 1 minute and carried 15 passengers before it sank!
